Alien Sea – An Abstract Seascape

Alien Sea

I keep telling myself that I’m not going to do any more pushers because I need to explore other methods. And then I go ahead and do one anyway. In this case I called it Alien Sea because that what it looks like to me. Being an abstract painting, what you see is equally valid.

I’ll confess that there is something about pushing color around with an empty mind until something emerges. As often as not what emerges is mud, but since I work in digital, the only thing I’ve lost is some time. Even when mud is the result I’ve usually learned sometime about what will work and what won’t. Primary colors in this piece are green and brown.

Empty Limbs – Abstract Painting

EmptyLimbsMy mini vacation paid off with the completion of the painting Empty Limbs. This is one of those pieces that went through several iterations before a final concept took shape.  About six months ago I was playing around with color. I had nothing specific in mind other than I was in something of a funk and was trying to capture that feeling.  The funk passed and the piece sat untouched.

A week or so ago I opened the file again and thought that the shapes somewhat resembled tree limbs.  With that in mind I went back to work on the piece.  The original had a solid blue background but I opted for the subtle landscape that this one has. All in all a pretty good piece I think.  1 of 1 Edition and prints available on my main website.

Painting Confusion – Stages

The painting is complete but I did remember to save a few snapshots along the way. Above is the piece with the solid black background, foreground roughed in and some of the underpainting.  Look closely and you’ll see see the drawing still visible.

This snap shot shows most of the underpainting complete. Major light and shadow is roughed in as well indications of the detail work to follow.

Confusion-sm04

This stage shows the detail work in full swing.  Most noticable are that the feet and legs.

Here we see the lighter areas reworked and defined.

And the final painting.  Additional detail work done to the hands and feet as well as matching the floor shadow to the figure. Before it was just roughly there.

Painting Confusion – The Drawing

In the past I’ve tried to take snapshots of works as they progress but sooner or later I’ll forget at some stage and then the effort is lost. I’m trying it again, but this time I’m going to post them as I do it. Maybe I’ll actually get snapshots of every major step.

Most of my paintings begin as a drawing.  In general they aren’t terribly detailed, just the shapes and indications of major light and dark points. Digital drawings unlike my conventional drawings tend to be less detailed.  I haven’t exactly mastered a digital drawing techniques, so I tend to use a cross hatch method of shading.  As a preliminary for a painting it works well enough.  As a stand alone drawing there is room for improvement.

The painting as I envision it will have a limited color palette, black and blue. In my mind confusion if a blue emotion so the entire figure will be done in blue with a black background. The concept I think is great. Hopefully I can pull it off.

The Maui Video

It has been a couple of weeks since I’ve had anything to post. Evidence to the contrary, I have been very busy. The last week of May my partner and I were able to travel to Maui, Hawaii. It was a once in a lifetime trip and we made the most of it. Not only did we return with many wonderful memories but we also came back with over a thousand pictures and a couple hours of video.

Upon returning I spent the better part of week just sorting through the photos. I spent several more days resizing and posting them on a subdirectory of my site.

Once I had the pictures posted, them I selected a few to upload to Redbubble for purchase. Those can be seen here.

Once that was all done, then I started tackling the video. I wanted to tell the story of what we saw and did while on Maui. And to make it available to everyone, I wanted to post the whole thing up on YouTube. It took me over a week to put it all together and then I discovered that it was way too long for YouTube. They allow a maximum of 10 minutes for a video. In total, my complete video came in over 40 minutes. So I went back and broke it into segements. In the end there were six segments and I even added a few more still shots to the first one. You can see all of them on my YouTube channel. I hope everyone enjoys. We certain will never forget our week in paradise.
