The Art Of Tim Stringer

So I’ve done yet another one and I’ve come to realize that I’m probably going to do a lot more of these pushers. There are just too much fun.  Dark Hills is my latest digital painting and while it is an abstract landscape it doesn’t take a huge leap of imagination to see why I named it as I did.

I keep telling myself that I’m not going to do any more pushers because I need to explore other methods. And then I go ahead and do one anyway. In this case I called it Alien Sea because that what it looks like to me. Being an abstract painting, what you see is equally valid.

I’ll confess that there is something about pushing color around with an empty mind until something emerges. As often as not what emerges is mud, but since I work in digital, the only thing I’ve lost is some time. Even when mud is the result I’ve usually learned sometime about what will work and what won’t. Primary colors in this piece are green and brown.

My mini vacation paid off with the completion of the painting Empty Limbs. This is one of those pieces that went through several iterations before a final concept took shape.  About six months ago I was playing around with color. I had nothing specific in mind other than I was in something of a funk and was trying to capture that feeling.  The funk passed and the piece sat untouched.

A week or so ago I opened the file again and thought that the shapes somewhat resembled tree limbs.  With that in mind I went back to work on the piece.  The original had a solid blue background but I opted for the subtle landscape that this one has. All in all a pretty good piece I think.  1 of 1 Edition and prints available on my main website.

The painting is complete but I did remember to save a few snapshots along the way. Above is the piece with the solid black background, foreground roughed in and some of the underpainting.  Look closely and you’ll see see the drawing still visible.

This snap shot shows most of the underpainting complete. Major light and shadow is roughed in as well indications of the detail work to follow.

This stage shows the detail work in full swing.  Most noticable are that the feet and legs.

Here we see the lighter areas reworked and defined.

And the final painting.  Additional detail work done to the hands and feet as well as matching the floor shadow to the figure. Before it was just roughly there.
