Man On A Stool

Man On A StoolOnce again I’ve returned to doing a figure and this time a nude. Actually I like doing nudes. I think the human body is a great subject for art just as any other of nature’s creations. Truth be told I started this painting over a year ago. Not an unusual thing for me. I’ll have fits of ideas for paintings and take them far enough along so that I can return to them later.

Man On A Stool is a straight forward light and shadow figure study done is an Impressionist style. The lack of detail is deliberate, the background only suggests a wood floor. What I have concentrated on is the light and shadow.

The Block

It happens to everyone in the creative arts, a point is reached where inspiration has dried up.  At this moment I have probably at least a dozen pieces waiting to be completed but my heart is in none of them.  Oh I’ll get back to them eventually. I did after all start them because it was good subject material. The point is, at this point in time there is no passion, and for me that is part of the creative process.

And I am passionate about my art.  There is a bit of my soul in every finished piece.  I spend hours and hours working to get it right, to convey an emotion, capture a moment in time or illustrate an idea.

Sometimes, like now, the passion isn’t there and I fiddle, darting from piece to piece getting almost nothing done. I need to feel inspired, to have that intensity of completely focusing on a piece to the exclusion of all else. I need to work for hours glancing at the clock and be surprised that three or four hours have gone by.

It will come.  I’ve been here before and I know that an idea will capture my imagination and I’ll be off.  Until then, I’ll fiddle.

Cube’s Destination

Cube’s DestinationCube’s Destination is the final painting in the series, Cube’s Cycle. Again, the repetition of three, same three colors but much more going on. My wondering cubes are about to meet their destiny, joining with others to form another larger cube. While I think I’ve taken this idea as far as it will go, it is obvious that those larger cubes are going somewhere. Perhaps in their universe they will merge with the final cube. Goes along with the idea of a universal intelligence.
