New Direction In My Art

As I’m working on the third painting in the Cube’s Cycle series I’ve become aware that for the moment I’m heading into different directions with my art. In one sense abstract seems to fit the bill but conceptual seems like a good description as well.

Given a preference I think conceptual is better, but wouldn’t you know, that term is already being used. So I’m going to have to think of something else. Certainly what I’m doing with Cube’s Cycle is trying to express a concept or at the very least a theme.

I’m sure that somewhere in the bowels of artdom is a term that describes what I’m doing. In my studies of art I never paid that much attention to terminology. I was always more interested in technique and mechanics.

This isn’t my first foray into expressing ideas through my art. Doorway and Or are other examples. I’m certainly enjoying this direction and I plan on continuing.

Cube’s Journey – Cube’s Cycle Series

Cube’s JourneyCube’s Journey is the second in the series of paintings which I’m calling Cube’s Cycle. Again the repetitive threes, same three colors used in Cube’s Rising, three cubes, three sides visible, three side not. In Cube’s Journey I have the cubes heading towards a sphere and a dark circle. Is this an obstacle or a destination?

The Series – Cube’s Cycle

Shortly after posting about Cubes Rising, the thought of turning it into a series germinated. Almost immediately I started the second painting, Cube’s Journey. Last night and today I was thinking about the third and final painting, Cube’s Destination. All three as the titles suggest will be based on cubes as well as the same three colors yellow, red and brown and repeating the number three.

Birth, life and death; past, past and future are suggested by the number three. There are other associations with the number but I’m focusing on the life cycle.

Pulling this off will also be meeting one of my goals for this year in doing a series. I will finish the series. When can sometimes be problematic.

Cubes Rising – First Painting in the “Cube’s Cycle” Series

Cubes Rising - Painting of three cubesCubes Rising is a fun painting, an exercise in shapes. And for those who care to notice, there is a repetition of threes. Three cubes, three colors (red, yellow, brown) used throughout the entire painting, three sides of the cubes visible and three sides not visible and the arrangement of the cubes forms a triangle. In various forms of numerology, 3 denotes completion or wholeness. There is no hidden message here, merely that I was deliberately repeating threes.

Review And Looking Forward

It isn’t uncommon at the start of a new year to look back and review accomplishments for the past year. I think to a certain extent just about everyone does it.

2007 was a good year for me in terms of art produced. Landscapes, florals, figures and imaginative works were all completed in 2007. Some of the pieces that I’m most proud of are Bird On The Beach, Lake Sunset, Or, Dance In Hell, Water Lily, Desert Sunset, and, Daisies & Pitcher. Especially gratifying are Or and Dance In Hell. Both are conceptual pieces with which I hope to stimulate thought.

Looking forward into 2008 I foresee more landscapes, possibly some still lifes and hopefully more conceptual pieces. The later is dependent upon the muses. I think I like to do a series but that too will depend upon being inspired by a particular subject or concept. There is an idea floating around in my mind which would compliment Or.

Most of all, for 2008 is the desire to continue to explore methods and styles. Digital art has so many possibilities for creative expression. Most of the time I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface.
